As November creeps towards December and 2021 slowly starts to draw itself to a conclusion, it felt like a good time for me to sit down and reflect on the year that’s been.

2021 was the first full year for me within the Spectrum business. I joined as the new Head of Digital Solutions in November 2020 following 10 years in predominantly digital roles at a local B2B distributor.

I joined full of excitement and keen to help shape the future of what was already a successful business with a small but growing digital division.

Having had various conversations with members of the Board as part of the recruitment process and having spent time browsing the website beforehand, I felt I had some idea of what ‘IT@Spectrum’ did when it came to Digital. However, soon after joining the business, I realised my initial perception was at best a little misguided and at worst just plain wrong.

This led me to my first conclusion around how we took Spectrum’s Digital Division to the next level. If we wanted to turbo charge our growth we needed to do a better job of describing what we actually do and the value we provide to our clients.

Despite only being in the business for a couple of months at the time, it was very clear that within the team, we had an incredible depth of expertise when it came to business process improvement and automation.

I saw firsthand the way we used that expertise to help many organisations, across many different departments and industries, improve and automate previously manual processes.

Ironically it was that versatility and breadth of experience which made it difficult to articulate what we did, clearly and effectively. We automated so many processes, for so many different types of business.

This has led to us changing the way we articulate our digital proposition through our website, our shop window to the world. As 2021 ends, we’re ready to launch our new website. Whilst redeveloping it, we’ve taken the opportunity to restructure the way we present our digital proposition.

On the new site, people can browse our digital offer through one of three different lenses:

By solution – the toolkit of ‘best of breed’ technology used to automate our clients’ processes. From document management to robotic process automation (RPA) we choose the right tool for each job.

By department – the variety of different processes we have experience automating grouped under three main departments: Finance and Accounts, Human Resource (HR) and Operations.

By industry – the different industries we have experience in and some examples of the processes we are often asked to automate within each.

This hopefully makes it easier to understand what Spectrum Digital can offer. However, a website can only do so much.

Overall, it’s been an exciting 2021. The innovation available in the market when it comes to technology is incredible. The intelligent automation provided by RPA can, and will, change the way organisations operate over the next decade. The revolution in manufacturing provided by robotics over the last 50 years is now due to shift to the back office and service sectors.

This time, not with mechanical robots but software robots. Trained to carry out routine, rule-based processes, so humans can concentrate on other things. Things they enjoy and where they can add real value.

This is the future of industry in 2022. This is Tomorrow’s Workplace, Today. This is Spectrum Digital. I can’t wait to be part of it!
